There’s no hiding our love for Haute Couture. It’s not just the impossible beauty or the impossible price tags. It’s the idea that every fashion lover deserves something that is (or at least looks) made-on-request.
Couture Runway 2012
Plus Size Style
There’s nothing more chic than custom. But even if you can’t quite afford that luxury, steal some of these hallmarks of Couture dressing to elevate your own evening wardrobe to Haute.
Craftsmanship
Quality construction that’s built to last is one of the most important elements of couture. Ok, we know many of you love the low price, high trend stores, but be honest – those outfits are usually wear twice and trash, right? Maybe that’s fine for a neon trouser, club top or one-season swimsuit. But some things are worth investing in, like a fabulously crafted evening dress that you can wear to a wedding, office party or the opera. Tadashi Shoji is an undisputed plus size evening wear king, but considering each piece’s incredible tailoring, precise draping, surgical ruching and focus on fit, you’ll also get a bit of couture with that purchase.
Eccentric Details
Couture looks are often heralded for the details that make up the whole. When looking for your next occasion outfit, don’t just settle for the basic LBD and don’t think that embellishment doesn’t work for the curvy girl. Take a nod from couture and look for playful or sexy touches in zippers, buttons, sleeves and belts. Challenge the rules with asymmetrical hemlines, off-beat patterns and quirky materials. But this is real life, so look for a unique detail that’s a bit unexpected but that you are still comfortable with, like Vera Wang’s White line dress with massive horsehair waist sash. The blush dress is pretty on its own but when contrasted with the oversized and starkly black belt its haute level just went up a notch.
Glitz
When it comes to couture more is sometimes more. And that goes double for the bling. Whether it’s done with hand beading, embroidery or metallics, a lot of gilt goes a long way on the runway. True, it’s typically the combination of this glitz with the fact that all the work is hand sewn that really sets couture apart. But, let’s focus on the bright shiny object. Bring immediate life into your evening selections with an all-over sparkler like an Aidan Mattox sequined dress. Wear your Ray-Bans into the dressing room because once these frocks reflect off the mirror you’ll be squinting, but the trade off is you’ll be stunning too. And the long sleeve plays off the short length in another stylish nod to couture.
