Spring Fashion Week 2015
With another round of fashion weeks now in the rear view, it’s a great time to reflect on the shows from Spring Fashion Week 2015: the good, the bad and yes, even the ugly. Sure, no coverage is complete without a roundup of trends and looks emerging from designer runways. But these days half of the show is actually out on the curb. Street style of the fashion week variety has become a major draw, as bloggers, style mavens, socialites and celebs draw crowds of fashion lovers who queue up outside runway shows in hopes of spotting a famous face or just the latest trend.
To the dismay of many a traditional fashion editor, crowds of show go-ers are now as interested in seeing the street fashion show as they are in seeing the designer show itself. And, in truly democratic fashion, this is a show that’s open to anyone with two feet, a bike or a Vespa.
In honor of the thousands of fashion fanatics who braved the elements, paparazzi and crowds just to spy designer duds at Spring Fashion Week 2015, here are the 8 things you’ve got to have to score fashion week caliber street style.
Start prepping your closets now: February’s Fall Fashion Week is a blink away.
#1 Big shades
Mimic Jackie O, Elton John or your favorite supermodel, but don’t even think about wandering the fashion week streets without the perfect pair of oversized shades. They say, “look at me – wait don’t look at me” like no other accessory can. And good news is you can score a great pair of specs at Target or Tiffany, H&M or Hermès, so splurge or save but don’t leave home without this essential item.
#2 Cool hat
The only thing more essential than great sunglasses is pairing them up with a chic hat. Today there’s so much choice – fashionable girls can pull off baseball caps or cowboy hats, fedoras, snapbacks, beanies or bowlers. The key is to find one that both compliments your overall look and the shape of your noggin and face. Try Eric Javits or Kate Spade for classic styles made modern.
#3 Chanel bag: Enough Said.
#4 A killer walk
We talk a lot about the fashion, but let’s not overlook the ‘street’ part. A successful outing crashing the sidewalks of fashion week will involve lots of walking. But this isn’t a 50% off sale at Kleinfeld or an Oprah speed walking course. This is fashion week people! If you’ve gotta walk, make sure it’s a strut. Not only will this boost the visual appeal of your outfit, but a clutch gait can boost your confidence and improve any candid pics you might end up in.
#5 Arm candy
For the professional fashion week crashers among you, showing up solo is probably key: you’re not there for fun, this is work. But, if you’re a newbie to the street spectacle of fashion week, make sure to pick a worthy companion. Remember, you’re going to get snapped with your +1 for all social media posterity – they should be as into style as you are, and as purposeful about their look to boot.
#6 Statement piece
Necklaces are a good way to go, but not the only way to achieve a rockin’ statement look. Some fashion crashers go buck wild with their style, trying to pull off Gaultier or Betsey Johnson level looks. While others go uber conservative in all black. Luckily the right statement piece can help bridge these two worlds. An ornate bejeweled necklace like Ralph Lauren’s multi-tiered gem stunners can make a basic cashmere top and skinny denim downright luxe. Try a statement item that speaks to your own fashion weakness – maybe it’s shoes, a handbag or bold makeup.
#7 Photo pose
10 years ago this wasn’t even a thing. But let’s face it, how much would it suck to have made it back alive from crashing the Marc Jacobs show only to find all your photos cringe-worthy. It may seem silly to vogue for your floor-length mirror, but take a cue from perennially camera-ready gals like Paris Hilton, Lupita N’yongo or Olivia Palermo. Know the angles, lengths, closeness and light that you think make you look bombshell best. Practice will make perfect so you’re all but assured of brag-worthy pics every time.
#8 Smart phone
How else will you snap those selfies and convince total strangers to help you document that time you were thiiiiis close to Rihanna. And whether you’re a Samsung lover or an iPhone devotee, that trusty phone can be a girl’s best friend when chasing fashion week. Internet service to track the after party, contacts to register all the cool peeps you’ll meet and apps to keep up with all the latest looks on and off the runway.
