Words like “resort,” “cruise,” and “holiday” typically conjure images of white sand, warm sun, and fruity drinks. However, in 2015, the pre-season or “resort collections” focused on more pragmatic looks, aimed not at the beach-going beauty, but the globe-trotting sophisticate on metropolitan adventures.
No Vacation Necessary: Resort Collections to Quench Your Wanderlust
Runway after runway featured models donned in lightweight belted dresses and jackets, jumpsuits, and long dresses. Many of the looks were menswear-inspired that ranged from highly-saturated monotone looks to bright bursts of colorful prints! By trending away from more relaxed looks designed for lounging on a boat deck or by a pool, designers afforded greater options to the fashionista whose summer plans take her only a little further than her front door.
Black-and-white reigned supreme as this duo-toned palette graced the runway during several fashion shows. The resort collection offered by Calvin Klein, for example, included several black-and-white dresses that one could easily wear while out at a sporting event or even while stylishly running errands over the weekend. Meanwhile, Diane von Furstenberg offered a range of different apparel – long dresses, short dresses, jumpsuits, and rompers – that were unified by the use of black and white prints. Ralph Lauren’s resort collection included several garments that were either all-black or all-white along with several neutral-toned jackets, pants, skirts and dresses; all suitable for keeping cool while heading to the office during the dog days of summer.
In contrast to the more tame offerings in some fashion shows, edgier fashion-goers reveled in the many offerings of designers like Chloe and Gucci. These resort collections featured bold colors and lots of prints – including oversize animal print jackets.
Many resort collections offered outstanding options that can easily be translated into plus-size looks. For example, the Calvin Klein plus-size printed pants (available at Lord & Taylor) clearly drew inspiration from the designer’s resort collection.
Similarly, the many floral dresses offered by ASOS easily emulate the feminine looks curated by Carolina Herrera, which were imbued with calm tones and floral accents to inspire whispers of femininity when donned for a summer wedding or other upscale affair. The Little Mistress Rose Maxi Dress offers a clear nod to the designer’s resort collection.
Ultimately, this year’s resort lines transport every fashion girl – plus-size or otherwise – to destination style!
