This year, Art Basel will take place in Miami from December 3-5! The 3-day event will feature historical and contemporary artwork, installations, photography, paintings, live performances and film screenings (not to mention celebrities, parties, and plenty of fashion).

Also known as a winter reunion for the international art world, Art Basel was founded in 1970 by Trudi Bruckner, Balz Hilt, and Ernest Beyeler, and made its debut in Miami in 2002, under the leadership of Samuel Keller. Being that Art Basel takes place in Miami, where the weather is pretty much always beautiful (although this week is calling for a quite a bit of rain) you can get away with just about anything as far as your fashion choices go. Layering is big right now, and Art Basel is the perfect place to go layer crazy with blazers and kimonos, shorts, dresses, and capes.
Here are three ways to really stand out from the crowd while you’re attending those gallery openings and parties that are sure to be over the top and spectacular.
Blazers, Capes & Kimonos With Shorts
The great thing about Miami is that even though it may be fall, you can still get away with wearing shorts. What better way to dress up a pair of leather or print shorts – and also be prepared for those chilly nights – then to rock a blazer, cape or kimono with your favorite skirt or thigh-high shorts. To take this look to the next level, go with boots instead of a safe high heel or sandal – if your boots are a bold, bright color, or embellished, even better! Keep in mind, shorts with a print or pattern on them will look great with a solid color kimono or cape worn over a white or black T-shirt. Add a statement necklace and you’re good to go!
Play With Patterns and Accessories
The Art Basel vibe is fun and carefree, so your fashion choices should be fun and carefree as well. If you can manage to pull together an effortless look that you actually put a great amount of thought into, you’re on your way to standing out from the crowd at any one of the many Art Basel events. When it comes to patterns, mix and match them dangerously (that’s a little dramatic, but you get the point). Don’t be afraid to rock a pair of leopard gladiator heels with plaid or snake print. Animal print accessories work well too, a leopard, snake or cheetah print handbag or pair of sunglasses can give your outfit that edge that it may need.
Art Basel is a big deal in both the art world and fashion world, so don’t be afraid to go all out with something a little dressier. While an LBD will do the trick, an all white dress or mini-skirt will do that much more. Try pairing your white dress with white sandals and a neon or pastel color cape or blazer for a bit of drama that will take your outfit from day party to rooftop happy hour with ease. Floral sundresses and all-over print pant suits area also nice options.
